Many French people used to be against the idea of mixing contemporary art and historic monuments such as the Pyramids of the Louvre back in 1989. After more than two decades, the idea is gradually accepted, appreciated and even welcomed today. Following the French artist Bernar Venet, the American Jeff Koons and the Japanese Murakami, it is the Portuguese Joana Vasconcelos' turn to offer the Château of Versailles an artistic summer for 2012. Mixing folkloric and whimsical portuguese objects, Vasconcelos transformed everyday object such as silver pot and lid into a giant pair of high heels entitled "Marilyn", blue champagne bottles into a cool illuminating sculpture named "Blue Champagne" in the fountain, traditional portuguese crochet into lions and crabs and many more unexpected trompe l'oeil objects. With this rare exhibition, Vasconcelos is trying to evoke the life of Marie-Antoinette of our time. If you are as curious as Joana, this sure is a fun exhibition to discover before September 30th, 2012.
