What is infinity? According to the Oxford dictionary, it's the state or quality of being infinite. And what does infinite mean? It means limitless or endless in space, extent, or size; impossible to measure or calculate. So how does one show such a definition? The Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota will show you just how. Studied in Hamburg and influenced by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse and Ana Mendieta, Shiota has been creating her own way of showing art through performances, body art and installations. Her signature "tangled threads" which resembles a spider's web began in 1996 with a series of installations. Aside from the simple wool threads she's been constructing, objects such as musical instruments, dolls' dresses, shoes and beds have also been slowly trapped into her web to call forth memories and emphasizes absence. The artwork evokes interpersonal bonds and the dependency of our roots and relationships that are sometimes harmed by the individualism of modern Western culture. The photos do seem like computer altered images but you can see in the video below how the artist had come to construct such a monumental inner feeling in a physical space. Unfortunately the exhibition is not infinite so don't miss it before February 18th, 2012.
