What about Mary ?

Mississippi Mary Tillman Smith suffered a hearing impairment as a child which led her to develop a creative urge using raw materials on the farm around her to express her inner feelings. As she grew up, she started to transcribe her own cosmology in paintings using scrap pieces of iron and of wood planks around her humble bungalow. What's fascinating about her work is her invention of a style in painting that acts as an answer to sadness and as an interpretation of forces beyond her control. Mary is certainly no conventional artist with her powerful manifesto of positive and subversive messages and various religious references which takes us back to the roots of creativity. Died over 20 years ago, Mary is now recognized as one of the greatest figures of African-American Brut Art. The exhibition is now brought to us in Paris with the gallery Christian Berst until March 2nd, 2013
