We often heard that "Laughter is the Best Medicine in the World." And perhaps it is what inspires the Chinese artist Yue Minjun in his signature and iconic laughing characters in his paintings. Despite his international reputation, Yue still remains relatively low profile to the public. What makes the artist enigmatic, just like his laughing characters in his paintings, is his way of reinventing the grotesque, codes, ironies and disillusions in the contemporary social situation in China, as well as the human condition in our modern world. Forty of his paintings are being presented as his first major European exhibition so as a wide range of drawings that had never been shown to the public at the Cartier Foundation. Through this exhibition and those laughing Chinese men, it may help us to understand the artist and his singular yet complex aesthetically intriguing paintings that defy all interpretation. You can begin to laugh along starting today until March 17th, 2013.
