Art is often a reflection of our time, life and society. It is supposed to beautify our world and to make us dream. Some artists do while others simply prefer to show the reality of our world as it is and to address issues that are not always pleasant to look at. Adel Abdessemed, the Algerian contemporary artist, is one of them. His speciality? Transforming everyday materials and images into drawing, video, photography, installation and performance that are unexpected and sometimes shocking. That something is often derived from his own personal, social and political experiences into a visual language that shows his sensitive, radical, deliberate, activistic and controversial personality. His work is being showcased currently at the Centre Pompidou in an exhibition entitled "Je suis innocent (I am innocent)" where many of his exceptional pieces such as Telle mère tel fils (Like mother like son), Zero Tolerance, Wall Drawing and his famous statue of the French soccer player Zinedine Zidane hitting the Italian player Marco Materazzi the year when France won the World Cup in 1997. Many interesting topics to be reflected upon until January 7th, 2013.
