It's rare to see contemporary art inspired by Islam and even to learn that there is actually an international award named Jameel Prize since 2009 that promotes art and design inspired by the Islamic tradition. Its aim is to explore the relationship between Islamic traditions of art, craft and design and contemporary work as part of a wider debate about islamic culture and its role today. The world famous architect Zaha Hadid (see our previous posting of her work currently exhibiting at the same museum here) is the patron of the prize. The exhibition showcases a wide selection of materials and technics such as terra cotta brick sculpture, mirror mosaics, digital collage inspired by traditional Persian costumes, etc. The fusion between the ancient and the new where the minimalism meets the ornamentation shows the avant-gardist spirit of the new Islam. Open minded to the unknown world? You should and you still have a few months to do so until February 26th, 2012.
