La rue Montmartre (formally known as rue de la Porte de Montmartre) was one of Paris' oldest streets in the city centre that was created around 1137 (almost 900 years ago!!). It has the name Montmartre because it was the road down from one of Paris' famous areas the Butte Montmartre in the north of the city. There is currently an exhibition, entitled "Les Grandes Heures de la rue Montmartre (The Glorious Hours of the street Montmartre)" showing photographs of this centrally located street back in the early 1900s. It is interesting to see what the streets and the neighbourhood were like back in the days. The exhibition is running through December 4th followed by another exhibition entitled "C'était hier Les Halles (Yesterday's Les Halles)" on December 7th till 22nd, 2011. The place you live in (if you are a Parisian) or the place you are staying (if you are a visitor) might just be on one of those photos at the exhibition!
