What's the Matta?

Chilean painter Roberto Matta (Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta Echaurren) is probably not as well known for his sculpting skills than his brush strokes.  Initially studying the architecture in Santiago, he fled in 1933 to Europe and then the US after his architectural disillusion in Chile.  The discovery of Europe and the United States was also a discovery of Surrealism Art for Matta and artists such as Salvador Dali and André Breton. He later became the leader of the art movement automatism and the disturbing state of the world politics during the 1940s and 1950s could often be found in his work with images of electrical machinery and distressed figures.  We discovered the hidden sculpting talent of Matta recently and it was a treat to see his 3 dimensional work and the many influences of the artistic movements and the places that he had lived in his work.  If you are interested in surrealism, you can check out his paintings here. You can admire his work in Paris until February 15th, 2012.
