TOILE
Most of the clothes out there are all created with paper patterns that have been drawn flat with numbers that correspond to the total length of our bust, waist and hips. Problem is, we are not flat like papers and even though we might have the same measurements, we don't have the same shape if you take the volumes into consideration. Consequently, some of the clothes just don't fit us well around the bust or they pull around our waist and hips. In haute couture and many high street designer brands, however, the clothes are first made directly on the mannequins using this yellow cotton fabric (show in the photo) to find the volumes need to make the fabric drape and fall effortlessly on the body. This fabric, in the French couture world, is known as la "toile" which will eventually be used to make the final paper patterns. With this fabric, we can let our imagination go wild and make shapes and styles that are not possibly achieved with simple calculations on pieces of paper.
